The Convent
Avenue Family Living Center is transitional housing
facility for homeless families sponsored by the New York
City Department of Housing Preservation and Development
(HPD) and the New York City Department of Homeless
Services (DHS). In December 1989, the management of the
Convent Avenue Family Living Center was transferred from
St. Nicholas Park Civic Association to West Harlem Group
Assistance, Inc.
The Convent Avenue Family Living
Center is a transitional facility where each family
occupies a self-contained apartment with the expectation
that permanent housing would be sought and leased within
a short period of occupancy. In preparation for
permanent living, residents are required to participate
in the on-site Housing Readiness Program for independent
living.
The admission process to this Center
requires a homeless person to go to the New York City
Emergency Assistance Unit (EAU) and/or the Red Cross
Association where the family may be later referred to a
transitional housing facility such as Convent.
